How to choose the right fence for you

Almost any yard or property can be successfully surrounded with a fence, may it be for looks, security, privacy or safety in mind. A properly installed fence will also add value to your property.

Before starting a new fencing project there are a few things any home owner needs to consider.

From determining the best fencing materials to deciding where to place the fence post, we can help you with that. It is also important to consider your taste in aesthetics as well. Here are some tips to help you decide if that cedar fence you always wanted really makes sense in your back yard.

Choose your Fencing Materials –

How much wear and tear will your new fence have to take? Do you have children and/or animals that might be climbing, leaning against or otherwise play with your new fence? How is the climate where you live? These very important questions need to be address before you decide on your fencing materials.
There are four basic fence materials to choose from Wood – Metal – Vinyl or PVC – Composite.

choosing the right fence

Which fence is right for you?

Wood fencing is very traditional, fairly inexpensive, but requires regular maintenance and upkeep. You need to seal the wood after installation to waterproof and reapply sealant or paint every few years. Fences made with large wooden sheets make excellent privacy fences, while Split rail fences made of cedar or redwood have a rustic appeal. They work well with ranch homes, homes set in the country and any home with a large back yards.

Metal fencing is sturdy, long lasting, maintenance free if you choose to powder coating the aluminum or wrought iron, and relatively inexpensive. Available in three basic types, there is the chain link fence, aluminum fence and of course wrought iron fence. If you’re looking for a decorative fencing style than a chain link or aluminum fence is probably not your best option. They look rather industrial and run of the mill. Wrought iron fences consist of metal bars that are often ornately shaped with unique embellishments.

Vinyl, PVC or plastic fencing is very popular since they are maintenance free, durable and easy to clean. There are no nails or sharp edges so they make an excellent choice when there are small children and pets in the yard. Vinyl fences cost about twice as much as metal fencing, are available in different styles and can last up to 50 years or longer.

Composite fencing is the newest type of fence available on the market today. It is an environmentally friendly option, made of a combinations of wood fibers and recycled plastics. Composite fences look and feel a lot like traditional wood fences with the added benefit of the low maintenance, like the vinyl fence. This type of fence has grown in popularity over the past several years and most of them have a 20 year or more warranty. This is the most expensive fence option available, but if you’re looking for a green alternative that combines all the advantages of wood and vinyl than the extra cost might be worth your while.

Choosing a fence for your home can be a daunting experience. Keeping the above factors in mind, along with your budget and preference of style will ensure you pick the right fence for your home and family.

My husband and I are wanting to have a fence put around our house, but we can’t decide on what kind of material we would like it to be made out of. I like how you mentioned that when it comes to using metal that there are a lot of different benefits that can come from using this kind. It’s good to know that there are some different styles that we can choose from to make sure that we get the one that matches our taste.

Good thing you provided the different types of fencing materials. I’m planning to install a new fence in our backyard but have not really decided which type of material to use. I like that you mentioned metal fencing is sturdy and can last for a long time. Plus, it doesn’t require too much maintenance. I will surely take this into consideration, and call my contractor to set up a schedule. Thanks.

I like how you said that metal materials are my options if I a want strong, long-lasting, and maintenance free fence. My parents are planning to have the fences replaced, and since none of us are willing to do the maintenance every three or four months, I’ll make a suggestion of using an aluminum fence. Thanks for sharing the idea. I’ll talk to them so we can hire a contractor right away.

My wife and I are wanting to build a fence for our dog in the backyard, so thanks for the helpful tips on how to choose the right material. I like that you mention how wooden fences work well with houses with large backyards. We have a decently sized yard with room for the dogs to run around, so we might need to go with wood since it’s fairly inexpensive.

I’ve just inherited a small place from my parents and I wanted to at put up a small farm. I now have all the necessary permits, moved on to that place already and started buying animals for the farm. Do you have any suggestion as to what kind of fence should be installed? Thank you in advance.
